Ozy: Mythical Hero

So recently, ultimatepsi hooked me on Ozy and Millie. Ozy, the main character is defined primarily by being an embodiment of the Zen philosophy, and is one cool cat (or wolf, as the case may be). Think Steve Webb here. Without pants.

Scratch that.

Anyways, the most recent arch involves Ozy's biological mother (Ozy is adopted), who vanishes after discovering the greatest flavor of ice cream ever. It was only in this comic that I realized that the author of Ozy & Millie is using Joesph Campbell's Hero with a Thousand Faces formula to make Ozy into a mythical hero. Several of the pieces have fallen into place in today's strip, the most direct of which is the John 3:16 reference in the background of the first frame. That, combined with the immaculate conception (Ozy has no father that is ever referred to or accounted for) is a major and recognizable feature of Campbell's theory of the myth. So now, in the fine tradition of Gilgamesh, Jesus Christ, and Anakin Skywalker, comes Ozy.

Huh, I'm going to have to add this webcomic to the list. It may well be the best strip I've ever read.

Many thanks, ultimatepsi and bronzite.

W00t! The recruitment continues!

It's my favorite comic too, though sinfest gives it a run for it's money.

You know this makes me feel better about my tendency to reference Ozy and Millie in my everyday life. I can be proud to be engaging in an age-old tradition of using mythology in analogy.
