Last Man On The Wall

I like to think of Software Support as the wall that protects Westbrook from the hordes of customers who seek to wreak terrible vengeanceon our development staff for the trials they have been forced to endure with our product. When you have two or three people helping you out, its easy; the customers are rarely organized enough to present any difficulty to three well-trained technicians operating in concert. However, occasionally, one of us leaves on vacation for a few days, and the call volume, while remaining the same, isn't as spread out.

Today, though, I am alone on the wall. One of our number is on vacation, and another is terribly ill, which leaves me alone to hold deflect the relentless advances of our customer base. I support users, aid our partners, deflect complaints, log defects, type case reports, answer emails, redirect callers. All these things are well and good, but to fulfill our commitment to our clients, the lines must remain open 11 and a half hours a day, meaning I must remain on station from the dawn of the day to the final ring, to return to my small apartment, eat what I can swiftly prepare, and sleep the sleep of the just, wondering as I drift off if the dawn will bring another day of glorious duty, in which I may demonstrate my commitment to my occupation.

Current Mood: busy

You're working 11-1/2 hours a day, being a one-man support team? Gawd, I feel for you. And technically, you're now exempt from overtime, aren't you? Or does Westbrook have the good graces to offer it anyways? Or are you salaried, making this all moot?

I'm salaried, so it moot. On the other hand, there's something strangely familiar about working ~12 hour days...

Comfortingly familiar, perhaps? :)

I so owe you. Is Jason out tommorrow too?

I wish I wasn't so sick.
