Memorial Day 2005

This weekend I spent down the Cape with ultimatepsi at a retreat in Brewster, about a mile from my residence there. We had a relaxed time, really small servings of mediocre food, and fun. On Sunday we entered a sandcastle building competition, in which we were awarded "Best Use of Mass and Void Architectonics and Syncopated Axial Symmetry". Unfortunately, only one known image of this majestic structure exists, and it was taken in the middle of construction. Later we stood on the sandbar as the tide came in over the castles, and I'm proud to say ours was the last to disappear beneath the waves (possibly because we selected the highest point on the sandbar to build on). In related news, if you're going to dig an 18" deep moat on the beach, use a tool. Your fingers are liable to get sliced open by a sharp piece of clamshell buried about 9" down if you don't.

On Monday we drove back to Medfield, where we spent the afternoon playing Diablo II. I had never actually played it before, although I had owned it for a long time. We made it to about halfway through the second act before I had to go to bed to get up and fly to Chicago in the morning.

Fast forward 14 hours: I'm heading down I-294 North at the helm of a rented Mercury Mountaineer. I've never driven an SUV before (unless you count the 1998 RAV4). It steers like a car, accelerates like a car, turns like a car, and stops like a supertanker. If you ever find yourself being tailgated by a Mountaineer, get the hell out of its way.
