OK, I know I rarely take a political stance via LJ, but this is important to me.

At 1255 EST today is the 63rd anniversary of the attack at Pearl Harbor. This year represents a new, permanent exhibit at the USS Arizona Memorial dedicated to the USS Oklahoma (BB-37). The Oklahoma sat outboard of the USS Maryland (BB-46) when the attack occurred, and protected the later from the torpedeos of the Japanese aircraft. During the assault, the battleship was torn so one-sidedly, that she capsized to port, trapping many of the crew inside. The ship settled to the bottom of the harbor, with its hull still above water. Navy and civilian worker immediately began the intense job of slicing through the reinforced warship's hull to rescue those still alive in the airpockets. The details of the rescue operation are far more grisly, but I'll spare you those. The National Park Service is considering renaming and expanding the Arizona Memorial to encompass the whole of Pearl. I support this movement and encourage you to do the same. Write your congresspeople and/or the National Park Service and tell them you support the expansion of the Arizona Memorial to include the rest of Battleship Row, and the other ships and installations that were attacked that day.
