Massachusetts, italicized

So today Rory, Jeremiah, and I went to Battleship Cove. It was a blast. We spent from 1200 to 1700 running around the USS Massachusetts, USS Joseph Kennedy, the USS Lionfish, and the Russian missile corvette Hiddensee. The battleship was incredible. We had so much fun climbing into various compartments, sitting at all kinds of stations, and generally exploring the hell out of everything we could get to.

Even cooler was when we ran across the Kennedy's Fire Control Room, which is normally closed to the public, but a volunteer was in there fixing the phone system. He brough us in, showed us everything in there, including the Mark 1A Fire Control Computer, a huge electromechanical system for tracking targets. He also showed us the sound-powered phone system the ship used, as well as the Master Compass Gyro, which was really neat.

The field trip was a lot of fun, and I'd like to do it again sometime (perhaps when the place isn't swarming with Boy Scouts). I did, however, develop quite a sun burn (too much time on the deck, plus driving there with the top down on the C70). Today was a very, very good day.

Current Mood: happy happy

It's impossible to go when it's not swarming with Boyscouts - trust me, I know. I stayed overnight onboard the USS Joseph P. Kennedy while I was still involved in the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps. That was amazingly fun - to wear a real Navy uniform onboard a real Navy ship, doing real Navy stuff, and then to go over and see the public and be mistaken for real sailors. And then we cleared off the USS Massachusettes and held uniform inspection on it. We also got to learn so many things (and see a lot of parts of the ships) that the general public doesn't get to see.
