[PUBLIC] October 12th, 1985

Still in PA. I was fortunate enough yesterday to go visit breakinglight11, who, as it turns out, is spending her break not a million miles away from here. We had dinner and went to see Watchmen at the theatre. I had never read the comics, so I was particularly impressed by the opening credits sequence, which was one of the most highly-compressed plot dumps I'd even seen, and had a great soundtrack to boot.

At the restaurant, I tried my AMEX, as my Mastercard is still offline, and was annoyed when it was declined, but that will happen now and again, so I just paid cash (I had the sense to use my ATM card to get a fair reserve of greenbacks when I knew I was going to be without my main card for a while), and went on with life. On the way home that night, my fuel light came on, and while I probably had enough gas to get back to my hotel, I didn't want to chance running out on the way back, nor not having enough fuel in the tank to pressurize the engine in the morning, so I stopped at a service plaza on I-476. To my considerable dismay, my AMEX was again not authorized, and I didn't have enough cash to pay for a refill. I ended up using my ATM card's debit function for the first time ever (I've had it for five years), but it figures that my AMEX would catch some bug the same weekend I'm stuck away from home with no personal card. I have to call American Express in the morning and find out what's going on. There was an email late last week that there was some issue or another, but it was supposed to have been fixed Friday.

In other news, I've reached the point in my X-COM game where I have to capture a Commander, and Oh God, its painful. Even with the AVENGER and Flying Suits, the damned monsters don't seem to be bothered by the stun bombs, and anything heavier than that will almost certainly kill them. Might be time to run up the Psi tree.

I've been having this issue with every base I go to being crewed by Mutons, who could fall out of a Stun Rod tree and hit every branch on the way down and still be nomming on my face when they hit the ground. I think I need to keep searching for a Sectoid, or even Floater, base.

I've always run up the psi tree before I get to commander captures* because it just gets so much easier when your guys can't get controlled trivially.

* There was that one time when a commander caught a small piece of a blaster bomb and was just knocked unconscious, but that was an accidental capture, not deliberate.

It is a reference to the movie Watchmen.

When X-Com was the hottest thing in my dorms over the Summer, my friend Ben hacked the game files to make his squad super-beefy... and the game engine just scaled right up to him and started throwing Eternals at his ass constantly.
