[PUBLIC] An Off-Balance Kickoff

Yesterday was interesting. In the early afternoon, mariaklob came out to visit, and that was very good. I don't get to see her very much anymore, and as is appropriate for friends who have been apart for some time, we went shopping for office supplies. I got many clipboards, and rainbows of index cards, and even some cardstock. Total Victory. After she had to leave, I began wrapping up game prep for the first session of a D&D4e Campaign I'm running this winter. Before the session start, though, I had to run an errand involving traveling nearish Boston. Luck was with me as I cruised down I-90 with John William's greatest hits filling my car, and with considerable glee (and velocity), I pulled off of I-90 onto the off ramp at 128 running some 30 minutes ahead of schedule.

When I passed the toll booths, I was 15 minutes late.

To my considerable chagrin, I spent 45 minutes within sight of the tollbooths, as a mass of cars slowly advanced toward I-95. We slowly broke into a dozen lanes, and then on the other side, began the arduous task of combining those 12 lanes back down to 2 for the on-ramps to 128. I saw three actual fender-on-fender collisions, and many scores of near-misses as the throng of increasingly angry drivers tried, by whatever grand scheme of reorganizing each imagined, to make their way to where they wanted to be. I discovered upon passing through the great ordeal, that the source of the jam appeared to be timidness on the part of cars on the northbound I-95 on-ramp in merging with I-95 itself, despite having a dedicated merge lane. The resulting stoppage had, by the time I was free, backed up traffic several miles up I-90. It was a remarkable achievement of indecisiveness and fear over the greater good.

As a result of that traffic jam and my particularly dummkopf move of not bringing my cell phone with me, my mission ended in failure and I was forced to return to Worcester in shame (although free of any traffic obstructions.) Upon my glorious return, I was able to run my session after all, and by all reports it went well.

the dedicated merge lane is a lie

Speaking as someone who goes through that intersection several times a day, the dedicated merge lane is only about 50 feet long and usually has two cars side by side in it. It's not temerity, it's the crushing weight of four lanes of 128 wanting to devour the merge lane whole. That said, your experience is especially bad.
