[PUBLIC] The Dark Knight

I just got back from the new Batman movie. I think I'm getting old, or I'm getting soft. I usually prefer my superhero movies to be very straight-forward and direct -- the hero gets the girl, the villain goes to jail. Character studies and the greater moral dilemmas have always been more comfortably couched in historical or speculative fiction. So I found the experience of the Dark Knight magnificently executed and totally unfulfilling as a superhero film. The acting was all but flawless, and the dialogue was excellently written, save for one preachy monologue from the primary antagonist. The premise, and the movie itself though, were ludicrous by contemporary standards, and by the third act of the movie, suspension of disbelief was a fading memory -- the movie had entered a juvenile series of scenarios that assumed nearly infinite resources and influence of a villain who is, by his own admission and apparent desire, an outcast who has managed to piss off everybody from the mayor to the mob. Before that, the movie is certainly worth seeing, but once they've taken the Joker into custody, walk out of the theater. Its all downhill from there.
