[PUBLIC] When It Pours, The Power Goes Out

So today I was supposed to resynchronize to CET to work with a client in Germany during their working days. Nominally this entails getting up at 0100, but as this was the first day, we decided to pick up at 0430 (1030 CET). So I set my alarm for 0400 and went to sleep around 2200. Around 0000, I hear a crash of thunder. I turn off and unplug my air conditioner and television, but I leave my laptop plugged in because its my alarm clock. At 0017, a hideous alarm sounds somewhere near my apartment. It sounds wrong, but I doublecheck to make sure its not my car making the noise. Satisfied its not, I hunker back down to sleep. At 0049, my laptop suspends itself for want of power. I hadn't realized it until that moment, but at 0017, a tree came down down the street from me and severed power to my whole side of the street.

Now I have no alarm, no computer, and no Internet access, and I have to be up and running in 3 hours. I set my cell phone alarm and go back to sleep, hoping power will be restored before I wake. No such luck -- at 0350, I send an email via my PDA to my colleagues in Germany telling them that due to power failure, I won't be able to start on time. With nothing useful to due, and having gotten very poor sleep over the past few hours, I go back to bed for another hour. At 0500, I get a call from the Account Executive for the client, asking for a briefing on the situation. I explain the power failure, and he reluctantly accepts that, given it is a 3 hour drive to HQ, it is an acceptable reason for a postponement of a few hours. After that, I go back to sleep.

I wake up at 0650, and the power still isn't back on (its now been 6.5 hours). I call my mother, ask if I she has power and if I can work at her house for the morning. She does, so I go. From there, things actually get done, albeit 2.5 hours late. It is now 0942 and the routers in the house still aren't answering pings, a sign I interpret to mean the house is still without power, but I have my security system guy coming between 1000 and 1300, so I have to go back so I can let him in, show him there's no power, and ask to reschedule. Go me.

Ouch. Sounds like you got hit hard.

I was quite surprised when I got into work and people were talking about a storm. Looks like it missed Charlton (or at least my part of Charlton) completely. Although it did apparently cause a tree to smash into my grandma's porch in Brookfield.

Hope that power was/will be restored soon.

All told, the outage was 19 hours 2 minutes. I have moderately severe losses in my fridge. Such is life.
