[PUBLIC] A New First

Last night I landed at RDU. For the first time in a long while, I got a rental car and booted up my GPS system. I promptly plugged in the wrong hotel and drove twenty miles in the wrong direction. The staff at the Courtyard was kind enough to direct to the correct hotel, which was roughly 12 feet from the airport.

Go me.

On the way back, while trying to change from I-40 to I-540, the clover-leaf had been rebuilt since my GPS database had been updated. The result was that I ended up taking a wrong turn on the most bizarre exit-ramp structure I've seen outside of Hartford, CT. The result? I was driving down a six-lane highway that my GPS system insisted didn't exist. After passing the first exit, I realized that as long as I stayed on this road, I was going to be traveling further and further from my intended destination, and my GPS could only suggest I make impossible turns off of overpasses to correct my route. Once I was off the Mystery Highway and back on the map, getting to my hotel was much easier (although it took almost 10 minutes longer than it should've.

My first impulse was to blame my trusting my GPS more than my own navigational skills with direction, but when I reviewed the directions my office sent me, they too did not account for this mysterious mid-exit exit that send me afoul. Indeed, even the mighty Google Maps Show s that exit as vaguely under construction with a much simpler clover than actually exists there this day.

In other news, I'm flying home tonight, and I'll be there Tuesday and Wednesday, although I'll probably be loaded for bear during working hours++. That also assumes that PHL has decided to stop hating me. We'll see.
