[PUBLIC] Dune: The Miniseries

Whilst in Mexico City, I read Frank Herbert's Dune. Last night I watched the first disc of SciFi's Dune Miniseries. I figured the Miniseries was required to have the length of time necessary to communicate all the many things in the book that are absolutely essential to understanding the story, and every review I've read said that SciFi's version of the story was far closer to the book than the previous cinematic incarnation.

Having seen the first episode (which seems to go up through the end of Part 1 of the book), I can only figure that the Miniseries would be utterly incomprehensible if one had not read the novel. Of course, that could just be me reeling at the amount of material my brain is filling in between and within scenes.

So did anybody ever watch the SciFi Dune Miniseries before reading the novel? Did it make any sense at all?

I have not read the novel. I have watched the miniseries. It made some semblance of sense.

Re: Datum

I should qualify that with "I thought End of Evangelion made sense and I haven't watched all of the series".

Re: Datum

Good qualification.

Though, do you mean the last two episodes of the series, or the movie? The movie actually does tend to make more sense to most than the episodes.

Hmm, I saw all of Evangelion in one sitting, so if a pig with a tiara had burst out of Shinji Akari's chest in the last act, I probably would have inferred some profound meaning.

I believe my confusion with the Dune miniseries came more from it not having subtitles and thus me losing small bits of comprehension there. Overall it made sense though.

I have now read the book, but I hadn't back then.

A couple years back my mom got me the Dune miniseries on DVD for Christmas. It's been sitting on my computer desk since. I should prolly gather up the motivation to sit and watch it.

And it likely has the option for subtitles when not watching on TV, too. :P

Nope. The DVDs didn't. It's possible they have closed captioning, but I don't know if I knew how to turn that on instead of subtitles back then (this was late 2002, or early 2003).
