[PUBLIC] Safely Arrived

I've successfully made it to the Hotel Nikko in Mexico City. So far my trip has been uneventful, and I've managed to bungle through the airport and charter a cab to take me to my hotel. I'm realizing now that not taking any of my electronics (except my camera) was unreasonable paranoia on my part, but I'll live with that. Although Mexico doesn't give the same innate sense of safety the Netherlands or England does, it is not as threatening as had been described to me by past visitors to this country. Once again, the tendency for the worst stories to be the most told has produced faulty intelligence.

On the upside, I crash through the first part of Dune on the flight out here. I've tried reading the book twice before, and the prose dissuaded me within a dozen pages or so. I suppose my tastes have changed, because now I find it entirely straight-forward and even fast-paced at some points. Not having my laptop means that I'll most likely be finishing it before I return to the United States on Tuesday.

It has also been a pleasant surprise to discover that prices here are lower than the US. The Pound and the Euro has gotten me so used to exchanging at a disadvantage that it seems remarkable to me now that I paid only $17.50 for a cab ride from the airport to my hotel.

That's less than I pay for a cab ride from the airport to my dorm.
