Hyundai Sonata

Last week, Avis granted unto me a shiny new V6 Hyundai Sonata. This vehicle has now dethroned the Pontiac G6 as my favorite Avis rental vehicle. The car had a tremendous amount of pickup that actually took me a few minutes to get the hang of coming out the lot -- it simply wanted to go right then, not 2 seconds later. The car rode very smoothly, and vibration at up to 80 miles an hour was indistinguishable from 40 mph. Even at speed the vehicle cornered quite admirably, and provided plenty of traction even through the very, very heavy rain I had to deal with early last week. The transmission is console-mounted, with the abnormally shaped shifting path found on the Outback and other vehicles. One very neat feature, though: the car can be shifted over to manual. From the Drive position, the right movement of the stick places the transmission into a manual override mode that allows the driver to drive the car as if it were a manual transmission. For somebody like me, who drives automatics almost all the time but worries about atrophying my manual skills, this duality is an extremely useful feature.
