Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

This weekend I went to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in the theatre. I like the movie -- it was very funny, if rather surreal. I suppose the was the intention. Although the production values were much better than the 1971 version (Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory), I thought Gene Wilder made a better Wonka than Depp did. Both ultimatepsi and I noted that the film was rather darker than the prior incarnation. It was therefore interesting to note that John August, the screenwriter, who had never seen the 1971 version before completing the script, thought that the Gene Wilder version was darker than his 2005 version.

In a not so unrelated comment

Now that the movie and game are public knowledge, Dragonfly had the opportunity to do some contract work on the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory video game.

The darker attitude seemed to be prevalent in the game as well. I wonder if that had to do with what has become more socially acceptable, or simply that Burton was involved.

In either case, I haven't had the opportunity to go see the movie yet, but I am glad to hear that you liked it.
