The Pontiac G6

Those of you who frequent my journal may have noticed that it has been a while since I had a Car of the Week entry. That is because Avis has seen fit to stick me with a Chevy Classic for the last three weeks. Suffice it to say the mileage was not the deciding factor in that vehicle mediocrity. Fortunately, I seem to have burned off my bad Car-ma those last 21 days and have been rewarded for my patience with the Pontiac G6 Sedan.

I had never heard of the G6 before this morning, and approaching it from the front, I misidentified it as a Grand AM with a less bladed body style. When I loaded my luggage and closed the door, though, I saw that the car bore the name "G6" right next to "V6". Grateful to be rid of the Classic, I climbed into the driver's seat.

The driver's seat is a beautiful fabric bucket seat with ergonomic lumbar support -- you'd have to be trying to get a cramp in that chair. The instrumentation panel was all analog in chrome-on-black, the only exception being the digital odometer. The speedometer only deigned to present a number every 20 miles per hour, demarking 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, and 140 miles per hour. The computer/radio built into the console presented me with all manner of information, from two different trip odometers, to radio frequency and quality information, environmental conditions within and without the car, and even the remaining oil in the engine.

I took the car out onto the highways of Chicago, and noticed that each time I pressed upon the accelerator, the only indication my command was being executed was a gentle press of acceleration back into my chair -- the engine never seemed to make a reving sound, nor failed to move the speedometer around its circle at a surprisingly constant speed. When I got past the I-294 toll plaza, I glided into the left lane and began to accelerate with the rest of traffic. I listened closely to the engine to monitor my speed as I scoped the traffic situation around me coming out of the plaza. The hum of the engine varied only the slightest as I began to accelerate, and I pushed down a bit harder to get up to 60 miles per hour. Finally, I competed the maneuver and, with a wide open lane of highway before me, I checked my speed.

I was committing a felony.

I had gotten up to 95 miles per hour (40 miles per hour over the limit on that stretch of 294) without even realizing I was at the limit yet. That's how quiet this car is. I spent most of the rest of the drive into work experimenting with the car's acceleration, which seems almost oversimplified, like you might expect of a poorly-written video game: push down on the accelerator, and no matter how fast you're going, you'll get a smooth, constant acceleration of around 4-5 miles per hour per second. I hope I get this one for the next 3 weeks.

I'd love a car like that, as long as it injected an amp into my toes everytime I accelerated 15 miles over the speed limit. Getting your license suspended sucks ass. :)

I'm sure you'd get used to it pretty quick -- your body does feature an interial guidance system for situations like this. You just have to remember to pay attention to it.

Oh, I have that, however it's outweighed by sheer indignance at the notion of having to drive a paltry 65 on a well-paved empty highway with banking turns.
