Xenosaga

So yesterday I got my copy of Xenosaga II, which included the movie version of Xenosaga. I watched the movie before playing the game, so as to remind me of the plotline. Its actually kinda amusing to watch the movie, because it leaves a lot of things out until somewhat later in the story. For example, you have no idea what KOS-MOS is until she awakens, and they completely skip the lifeboat sequence. The climax, however, is fully intact and at least as good as a movie as it was as a game. KOS-MOS comes across as half Master Chief, half HAL 9000.

Xenosaga II is also pretty good, but carries on the tradition of playing an anime episode's worth of cutscenes between dungeon crawls. The game has a "tutorial" training mission set 14 years before the events of the first Xenosaga, but once that's complete, the game picks up a few minutes after the end of its predecessor. The battle system is tweaked but not significantly different from the original (although due to forgetting how Skills worked, I played through the first mission and a half without the benefit of healing. Interesting conduct if you want to try it). I'll post a more complete review when I finish the game.
