Space Empires 4

Played a fair amount of Space Empires 4 today. I had a lot of fun. I always thought the AI did a reasonably good job resolving battles strategically, but recently I've had a doctrine shift in the way I play and discovered that the strategic battles are fought outright stupidly. Attack-capable units simply charge at the baddies, with no regard to what they are attacking. As a result I saw the computer sent a force of Space Superiority fighters directly into a heavily flak-equipped dreadnought, and unsurprisingly have them mowed down. The computer understands the mass-and-attack strategy, and to have its non-combatants move away from the melee, but it has no concept of what should attack what else. Its depressing, and makes me think of other strategy AI's. They rarely understand the balance of power between units, and that is how I can beat them; I meet their fighters with flak, their capital ships with bombers, and their flak with big guns. Now if only somebody would make a more intelligent AI. Perhaps it could even be done...
